The Pre-Travel Consultation: What Makes Us Different

Your medical history, health, and trip are reviewed with you. You learn about the travel risks of your destination and the required and recommended immunizations. If you have any health conditions, needs, or concerns that require a vaccination or medication protocol different than the standard protocol, we will work with you to make adjustments. You receive a written report about the current health risks of your destination.

Preventative Medicines

Some diseases are prevented by vaccination. For others, like malaria and denque fever, no vaccines exist. Fortunately, preventative medicines for some of these, such as malaria, are available and can be taken orally while traveling. Medications for common travel illnesses, like traveler's diarrhea, are also available.

Most travelers do not need more than three vaccines. Most common are Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, and Tetanus.

Scheduling appointments four to six weeks prior to departure is best.

  • Most vaccines take time to become effective.
  • Some immunizations are given in a series over several weeks.
  • Young children who are traveling may need routine immunizations sooner than normally scheduled.
  • People with certain conditions such as immune system problems may have different immunization recommendations than healthy people.

Prior to your appointment we review your:

  • Travel dates and destinations;
  • List of medications currently taken;
  • Childhood and adult vaccination records;
  • World Health Organization International Certificate of Vaccination (WHO Yellow Book), if you have it.
